PBI (Polybenzimidazole)

Outline of material

PBI has high heat resistance for a plastic material, with a deflection temperature under load of 435°C. It also has excellent electric and mechanical characteristics. PBI is used as a substitute for conventional plastics, or as an alternative material to carbon, carbon-carbon composite, ceramics, and metals.

Characteristics

Heat characteristics

  • Deflection temperature under load of 435°C, glass transition point of 427°C.
  • Does not burn at (momentary) temperatures of up to 760°C and maintains physical properties at temperatures as low as -200°C.
  • Low coefficient of thermal expansion is similar to that of aluminum and brass.
  • UL 94 V-0 rated.

Mechanical characteristics

  • Tensile strength similar to that of aluminum. (1630kg/cm2)

Electrical characteristics

  • Excellent insulating properties (23 kV/mm) and stable dielectric constant.

Sliding characteristics

  • Excellent wear resistance in high temperatures of up to 300°C.

Plasma resistant

  • Excellent plasma and radiation resistance.

Organic solvent resistant

  • Excellent resistance against toluene, xylene, acetone, and methanol.
