PBN (Polybutylene naphthalate)

Outline of material

PBN is an engineering plastic from the polyester family. It has excellent wear resistance, sliding characteristics, hydrolysis resistance, and chemical resistance. Compared to PTFE, it has superior mechanical strength, a lower coefficient of linear thermal expansion, and lower specific gravity. Combined with its superior wear resistance compared to PPS, these advantages make it a suitable replacement for PTFE and PPS.

Characteristics

Compared to PBT

  • Performs well as a gas/gasoline barrier
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Excellent hydrolysis resistance
  • Excellent sliding performance
  • High deflection temperature under load
  • Fast crystallization
  • Low elution of metals and organic substances

Compared to PTFE

  • Low specific gravity (price by volume is similar to PTFE)
  • Excellent mechanical characteristics
  • High deflection temperature under load
  • Low coefficient of linear thermal expansion

Compared to PPS

  • Superior wear resistance
  • Low specific gravity
  • Excellent mechanical characteristics
