PES (Polyether sulfone)

Outline of material

Sumika Excel PES is a transparent, amorphous polymer that is amber in color. It offers the highest level of heat resistance among transparent plastics, and features excellent practical and mechanical characteristics. It is also one of the top thermoplastics, with a flexural modulus in the range of 100 to 150°C and creep resistance of up to 180°C.

Characteristics

Heat characteristics

  • Continuous service temperature of  180°C
  • Deflection temperature under load (1.82 MPa) of  203°C
  • Withstands hot water and steam of up to 160°C
  • Does not hydrolyze
  • Has a low coefficient of linear thermal expansion and is not greatly reliant on temperature

Mechanical characteristics

  • Creep resistance of up to 180°C puts PES among the top thermoplastics
  • Flexural modulus of between 100 to 150°C is among the highest of all thermoplastic materials, and there is little change within the range of -100 to 200°C.
  • Tensile strength similar to that of polycarbonate

Chemical characteristics

  • Withstands oil, grease, and cleaning solvents
  • The best amorphous polymer in terms of stress and crack resistance
  • Dimensional change is limited even in water
  • FDA-approved for food hygiene standards
  • Low flammability (V-0 rated at 0.043 mm) and very low smoke emissions when burning

Mechanical workability

  • Machinable
  • Bendable
